HETONA is an environmental-based non-profit NGO registered under Societies Registration Act 1860, Foreign Contribution Regulation Act 2010, and Income Tax Act 1961 for 12A and 80G. It provides eco-based solutions to subjects such as the environment, agriculture, water and sanitation, livelihoods, and cross-cutting themes like sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, climate-smart farming, safe and potable drinking water, environmental sanitation, appropriate technologies, value chains, credits, and marketing.


Since its inception in 1992, HETONA has been engaged in a number of activities like forestry, agriculture, rural development, water and sanitation, livelihoods, women empowerment, health, literacy, dissemination of appropriate technologies, and so on. HETONA has the experience of various community-based projects/programs, which were implemented on a participatory approach. The main projects which were impact making, implemented were (1) wasteland development and watershed management from 1994 to 1998 sponsored by the Ministry of Rural Development, GOI. (2) Swajal project on rural drinking water supply and environmental sanitation (1998-2006) sponsored by World Bank. (3) Water and sanitation-Bagi, Badalda (2002-03) sponsored by UNDP-SGF. (4) To identify and popularize appropriate technology on water management, health, and sanitation (2004-06) sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology GOI. (5) Diversified Agriculture support project (2001-03) sponsored by WB. (6) SWAp (drinking water and sanitation) (2007-12) sponsored by WB. (7) Livelihood Improvement Project for the Himalayas (LIPH) (2006-12) sponsored by IFAD (8) NRDWP (National rural drinking water program 2013-16) and (9) Swachh Bharat Mission (2014-19) etc. Presently we are working on the Jal Jeevan Mission in 150 villages of the Uttarkashi and Tehri districts. The project proposed and on the pipeline is SFURTI. HETONA's partners are VNV Advisory Pvt.Ltd for value chains and TERRACON ECOTECH Pvt.Ltd for technical assistance on nature-based solutions.
